Acne types

Most people think of spots as raised red lumps, often with a pus-filled head, but in fact there are a number of different types:

		Microcomedones are the beginning of a blocked pore and the very smallest of spots - so small you cannot see them
		Comedones are formed by a plug of dead cells, sebum and bacteria in the hair follicle. There are two types, blackheads and whiteheads Blackheads are open comedones which turn black when special pigment-producing skin cells called melanocytes react to the air Whiteheads are like open comedones but with skin over the top
		Pustules are small inflamed areas of skin filled with pus
		Papules are small, solid, inflammations of the skin that do not contain pus
		Nodules are white and dome-shaped like papules, but are more inflamed and difficult to treat
